Spherical roller bearings are designed to accommodate significant radial loads, although they can also accommodate thrust loads in both directions thanks to the skewed arrangement of the rolling elements. The rolling elements of these bearings are two rows of barrel-shaped rollers. During operation, the rollers move on two raceways in the inner ring and one spherical raceway in the outer ring. The raceway in the outer ring allows the bearing to self-align by up to 2° at low loads.

Spherical roller bearings are manufactured with cylindrical and tapered bores, with tapered bores with a taper of 1:12 (marked at the end with the letter K) and with a taper of 1:30 (marked at the end with K30).

Spherical roller bearing designs with a tapered bore enable easy installation through the use of adapter or withdrawal sleeves.
